Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda Piazza Pretoria, Palermo, Sicily, 2017.
In our web magazine www.eluxetv.com May 26th 2017 in a feature on Melania Trump wearing the Dolce Gabbana stand out Sicilian rose coat, we mentioned Giuseppe di Lampedusa’s cult novel “Il Gattopardo”, set in Palermo that Visconti made into an epic film, The Leopard, with a sensational performance by Burt Lancaster, and starring roles for French heart throb Alain Delon, and the beautiful Claudia Cardinale.
Dolce Gabbana’s Alta Moda collections are enthralling classic Sicilian inspired art. It brings back the perfume of the di Lampedusa story, opulence and Sicilian decadence, in D&G’s sexy low key, elaborate “turn heads” casual style for today’s cool Jet setters. .
Sicily is famed too for its “Teatro dei Pupi” , costumed theatre……..
Palermo airport saw 150 private planes bringing in their top clients from around the World for a stunning show.
A Couture dress starts at £30.000, & by the next morning after the show most of the 116 outfits had, it seems, been sold. What a party those Girls must have had flashing the plastic, Dolce Gabbana have created an Event that overtakes “fashion”. It is participative “Art”.

“Chrysler” inspired icon.La Comete sculpture by Guirard-Riviere, Etling Foundry. See reference to the Chrysler building in New York.
La Comète is a magnificent Art Deco sculptural image of a female nude modelled as a streamlined comet, her long hair trailing behind her as she flies through the clouds. The silvered bronze sculpture is heightened with parcel gilding and raised on a breche griotte shaped marble base, signed Guirard-Riviere and inscribed with the foundry mark Etling Paris. The sculpture’s composition displays a great sense of dynamism and movement.
This iconic design was considered the height of modernity and an example of the model was placed in the reception of the famous Chrysler Building, New York from 1930 to 1942.
See example with a green/brown patina which was sold at Sothebys, New York in 2014 for $ 60,000 USD

Sicily. Piazza Armerina. Villa Romana del Casale. Sensational mosaics in a 4th Century Luxury Roman villa
“These mosaics are unique in the Mediterranean,” says the Italian archaeologist Carmela Bonanno, gesturing towards the 3,500 square metres of mosaic pavements that fill the Roman Villa del Casale near the town of Piazza Armerina in central Sicily. “It’s a miracle that they’re intact.”
Sicily is blessed with several spectacular classical sites: the Greek Theatre at Syracuse, the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento, the ancient theatre overlooking Mount Etna at Taormina, to name three. But the Villa del Casale, which was protected by Unesco in 1997, offers something different. One of the best-preserved villas from anywhere in the Roman Empire, it still boasts much of its original decoration. The contents of, say, Hadrian’s villa at Tivoli outside Rome were long ago dispersed. But, against the odds, the mosaics of the Villa del Casale (named after an agricultural settlement known as casale, or farmhouse, that flourished there in the 15th century) remain in situ.
The UNESCO World Heritage site has seen the completion of most of an ongoing EU-funded reconstruction project that began in spring 2007
Piazza Armerina. Sicily. Villa Romana del Casale. UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Villa Romana del Casale was constructed (on the remains of an older villa) in the first quarter of the 4th century AD, probably as the centre of a huge latifundium (agricultural estate) covering the surrounding area. How long the villa had this role is not known, maybe for fewer than 150 years. The complex remained inhabited and a village grew around it, named Platia (derived from the word palatium (palace). The villa was damaged and perhaps destroyed during the domination of the Vandals and the Visigoths. The outbuildings remained in use, at least in part, during the Byzantine and Arab periods. The site was abandoned in the 12th century AD after a landslide covered the villa. Survivors moved to the current location of Piazza Armerina.
The villa was almost entirely forgotten, although some of the tallest parts of the remains were always above ground. The area was cultivated for crops. Early in the 19th century, pieces of mosaics and some columns were found. The first official archaeological excavations were carried out later in that century.
The first professional excavations were made by Paolo Orsi in 1929, followed by the work of Giuseppe Cultrera in 1935-39. The last major excavations took place in the period 1950-60. They were led by Gino Vinicio Gentili, after which a cover was built over the mosaics. In the 1970s Andrea Carandini carried out a few localised excavations at the site. Extract courtesy Wikipedia. Norman Foster inaugurates its headquarters in Madrid: “We build houses, but we do not create communities”
June 1st Norman Foster opens his long-awaited foundation in Madrid, in the old palace of the Duke of Plasencia, which will host the 75,000 documents from his archive.Travelling between London Madrid & Lausanne, This is his life after overcoming a bowel cancer and a heart attack: he travels continuously in his Falcon 900 (is an aircraft designer and a RAF pilot) projects and building projects in fifty countries At the same time , he runs a team of more than a thousand people and never thinks to stop.
“Lord” Foster, what are people without a past?
As I always say to the students, if you want to look far ahead, you will first have to look far back. There are many factors that are in the genesis of a design, but for me one of the most important is History. If you are fascinated by the future, you need to be passionate about the past, because you are absolutely connected. And the problem is that the educational system regards History as an isolated compartment. I remember when I arrived at Yale University, Professor Vincent Scully taught History by linking it even to the cinema premieres in the city , And of course what the great architects of the time, like Louis Kahn or Saarinen, did. All human beings are products of the influence of the past, equal to what you dedicate.
One of the main tasks of its foundation will be to promote interdisciplinary thinking.

He was “the man your man could smell like.” We looked away from him and were suddenly transported onto a majestic ocean liner. An outstretched hand offered us “two tickets to that thing you love,” shortly before the tickets magically dissolved into diamonds. Then he was on a horse. Really.
This crazy-yet-crisp introduction to one of the most popular viral ad campaigns in history, which aired for the first time during 2010 Super Bowl showdown between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints, sparked an Internet phenomenon, reaching more people than Procter & Gamble (Old Spice’s parent company) could have possibly fathomed. The ad amassed 220,000 YouTube views in the few short hours after the Super Bowl, and the video continually gained about 100,000 views every few hours. Even comments on sites like 4Chan and YouTube were overwhelmingly positive. The video had gone officially viral.
Months later, when the campaign had seemingly hit its high point, marketing agency Wieden & Kennedy dreamt up one of the most memorable social media campaigns to-date: A two-day marathon of high-quality, personalized video responses to questions asked by fans on Twitter and YouTube—set up, shot, and published online in Mustafa’s own bathroom.
In the Old Spice Guy vs. New Old Spice Guy Fabio campaign, the creative team even let fans control the outcome of the most important part of the story: the ending.

Caltagirone, Sicily. Famous since millennia for stunning ceramics. During the Spring & Summer festivals to celebrate the famous colourful tiles.
Swirling patterns, vibrant colours, painstakingly detailed designs….. Wherever you go in Caltagirone this is what you will see: For Millennia ceramics have decorated staircases & facades of Churches & Palazzos. Virtually all buildings in the old town are decorated with ceramic tiles, shops spill their delightfully crafted wares onto the pavements and the effect is one of vibrant colours.
The highlight is undoubtedly the 142 steps of the Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte that connect the lower town with the older upper town. The upright of each step is decorated with ceramic tiles, offering a colourful alternative to the grey lava stone of the horizontal parts. During the last two weeks of May the steps are home to a festival known as the “Infiorita” in which they are covered by an enormous floral display. At the end of July (24th and 25th), in honour of the town’s patron saint, San Giacomo, and in the middle of August, the steps undergo yet another transformation, the “Illuminata”. Thousands of candles flicker away creating a truly breathtaking sight.
Very much an aristocratic town, Caltagirone has many splendid palaces and churches.
Caltagirone’s history mirrors that of so many other towns in Sicily: the Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish and French all passed through leaving indelible traces of their presence and like the towns of the Noto Valley and Catania, it too was destroyed in the famous 1693 earthquake. Very much an aristocratic town, Caltagirone is brimming with splendid palaces and churches.
The modern name derives from the Arabic Qal’at Ghiran meaning something like “Castle of Vases”. During their dominion, the Arabs passed on some essential ceramic-making techniques, such as glazing, to the already flourishing local industry. Caltagirone 40 minutes from Catania.

3 JUNE 2017 •
Aidan O’Brien winning another Investec Derby should never come as a surprise but even he appeared genuinely astounded by the identity of his sixth winner when Wings Of Eagles, a 40-1 shot ridden by journeyman jockey Padraig Beggy, swooped past his better fancied stablemate, Cliffs Of Moher, in the closing stages to win the 238th running of the Classic at Epsom yesterday.
For a trainer whose horses generally win at short odds, it was the longest priced Derby winner since Snow Knight returned a 50-1 winner in 1974. Snow Knight made all, but Wings Of Eagles came from so far behind he was only picked up by the commentator deep inside the final furlong on his way to bagging the richest race ever run in Britain.
For the first mile of the race, Wings Of Eagles, nominally fifth or sixth in the Ballydoyle pecking order for this year’s race if you take jockey bookings as your guide, only had two runners behind him.
Up front, his stablemates, Douglas Macarthur and The Anvil, Ballydoyle’s pacemakers, had set a searching gallop and, while Douglas Macarthur hung on in there until the two-furlong marker, he was eventually caught and headed by the Frankie Dettori-ridden 7-2 favourite Cracksman.
However, Dettori’s dreams of a third Derby soon evaporated as the 5-1 shot Cliffs Of Moher, having made his way from a long way back, hit the front a furlong out. At that point it appeared for all the world that, from a choice of six, Ryan Moore, Ballydoyle’s first jockey, had picked the right colt.
But behind him still picking his way through traffic from the back was Beggy on Wings Of Eagles, a son of the 2011 Derby winner, Pour Moi.
He went through one gap so quickly, recalled the jockey afterwards, that he suddenly found himself on the heels of Dubai Thunder and a couple of times his run was interrupted by having to switch him round horses coming back at him.
When Wings Of Eagles saw daylight, though, it was as if he had just joined in. He flew up the outside, making up five lengths inside the final furlong, to catch Cliffs Of Moher 50 yards from the line before going on to win by three quarters of a length, with a neck back to Cracksman in third, and three-quarters of a length to the other Frankel colt in the field, Eminent, in fourth.

It’s take two in the Louis Vuitton Americas Cup Qualifiers Round Robin 2 with the rerun of yesterday’s (Wednesday May 31) four postponed races due to take place on the Great Sound today.
Mother Nature put paid to any race action yesterday, with winds over the Great Sound racecourse remaining below the minimum six knot limit that the America’s Cup Class (ACC) boats can compete in.
However, with winds predicted to reach the required 6-24 knot range needed to race today, action is set to return with SoftBank Team Japan, Groupama Team France, Land Rover BAR, Emirates Team New Zealand and ORACLE TEAM USA all set to feature.
BBC SPORT REPORTED Wednesday’s four races in the America’s Cup Qualifiers were postponed after organisers decided winds were too light to let sailing go ahead in Bermuda.
The races have been pushed back to Thursday, a scheduled day off.
Rules state that winds between six and 24 knots are required to race.
Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR team will face both New Zealand and France on Thursday, while France will also race Japan, who will then go on to meet defending champions Team Oracle USA.
Team USA lead the standings with New Zealand in second place, ahead of Britain in third, Sweden, France and Japan.
It is the second time in this series that racing has been postponed. Wednesday’s event was halted as winds dropped below six knots, and the opening day’s racing was delayed because of gale-force winds.

There is no way to mitigate the disaster that this season has been for the McLaren-Honda Formula One team.
Now in the third year of the alliance, with Honda providing the power units, the opening months of this season have been deplorable. The team has yet to score a point after the first five races, and the list of technical issues has been embarrassing.
Since a revamp of the power unit over the winter, there have been electrical faults, water and oil leaks, and problems with horsepower. In the third race of the series, in Bahrain, the driver Stoffel Vandoorne failed to start because of a water pressure problem. In the next race, the team’s star driver, the two-time champion Fernando Alonso, also did not start because of a power unit failure.
And now the team is even allowing Alonso to miss the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday so he can race in the Indianapolis 500. Alonso will be driving the IndyCar version of a McLaren-Honda, run by Andretti Autosport.

This time, two Victoria’s Secret Angels visited the Caribbean nation for sassy and island-inspired photo-shoots that will feature in W Magazine’s September issue.
Brazilian Adriana Lima and Puerto Rican Joan Smalls enchanted the island with their exotic beauty and claimed to have a lot of fun working in this beautiful island setting.
With Old Havana’s cobblestone streets as a backdrop for various photos, the ‘angels’ wore stunning outfits and accessories from renowned designers, including Alexander McQueen, Missoni and Marchesa. Alasdair McLellan was in charge of shooting the girls’ photos which were then styled by Edward Enninful.
Wishing to reflect some of Cuba’s sass and charm, the girls posed in significant landmarks of the Cuban capital like the ‘Pabellon Cuba’ in Vedado’s 23rd street, as well as in random street corners of the old town for a spontaneous image.
It wasn’t, however, all work for these stunning models. Joan Smalls and Adriana Lima also took this chance to get to know a little bit about Cuban culture and interact with its people.

Omega Globemaster, understated and elegant like the man who wears it. The perfect object2desire for Christmas
The Globemaster is already a legendary name in the OMEGA family. Now it has been updated to become the world’s first Master Chronometer, further enhancing its reputation within the watchmaking industry. Along with a new standard of quality, the simple yet captivating design makes this watch a true object of desire. For this model, the stainless steel case features a hard metal scratchproof fluted bezel, with a blackened Constellation star, and hands and indexes which have also been filled with illuminous Super-LumiNova. The caseback includes a stainless steel Central Observatory medallion, while the opaline silver “Pie Pan” dial is reminiscent of the first 1952 Constellation model. The design is finished with grey leather strap, and at its core, the watch is driven by OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8900, featuring revolutionary anti-magnetic technology. Omega SeaMaster Planet Ocean, An alluring Man’s wristwatch, Über chic for an elegant girl. Christmas solved.
Pre-Baselworld January 2016 – Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Master Chronometer 39.5mm Sedna Gold, brief overview.
There are quite a few things to say about this new watch by Omega. Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m / Master Chronometer / 39.5mm / Sedna Gold. You spotted it: new movement (and used for the first time in the Planet Ocean collection), new and smaller size and finally a new material. And whatever the brand says about it, for us it’s not a ladies’ watch but rather an elegant “unisex” edition. Overview of this new toolish but luxurious diver by Omega to be introduced at Baselworld 2016.
As of now, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m was available in 4 sizes: one edition dedicated to men with a 45.5mm case, one for the GMT editions at 43.5mm, one more “unisex” edition at 42mm (even if clearly, the buyers are mainly males) and one edition dedicated to ladies at 37.5mm.
Even if visually extremely close to its sisters of the collection, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Master Chronometer 39.5mm Sedna Gold changes everything in the details: new movement, new dimensions, new dial, new materials and even new strap. … First thing to note is the introduction of the new series of movements by Omega, the Master Chronometer (introduced in the Globemaster and coming with the METAS certification, that is used for the first time in the Seamaster Planet Ocean collection. This new edition features the Calibre 8801 (visible thought the caseback) with the same architecture as the 8500 (Co-Axial escapement, double barrel and automatic winding) but now with highly antimagnetic properties (as resistant to 15,000 Gauss). It seems that for the coming years, Omega will implement the Master Chronometer movements in the entire range of watches – and they have already started in the Speedmaster collection, with the new antimagnetic chronograph with moon-phase.

Ivo Ferriani, President of the FIBT: “We were impressed by the totality of the concept of the ‘Ice Racer’. We are convinced that with the monobob, we can inspire the next generation get more involved in bob sports.” The monobob from SwissBob combines Swiss technology in a new, totally unique sporting device. “We are extremely proud to have our monobob awarded the contract for series production,” says Peter Tinner of SwissBob. “Our goal is to bring a breath of fresh air to bob sport with a high-performance, safe and affordable monobob.”
Joining forces to create the standard bob
To perfect the success of Swiss Bob, it took the dedication of renowned Swiss companies. The elegant monobob was developed, tested and optimized by the Sauber F1 Team in Hinwil – Switzerland. The heart of the “Ice Racer” is a high-precision monocoque, which is produced using the same sandwich design as Formula 1 racing cars. As well as ensuring an extremely high level of safety, this also guarantees a construction that is absolutely uniform, which is important for fair competition with standardized sleds. Monisha Kaltenborn, CEO of Sauber Motorsport AG: “It was an exciting experience to transfer our expertise from motorsport to the ice track.” During development the highest priority was placed on safety and the design of sophisticated, efficient aerodynamics, which also give the monobob its attractive look.

Cartier Art Deco necklace.
Jacques Cartier had visited India for the Durbar in 1911. Overwhelmed by the beauty of the Indian jewellery he returned to Europe where he started to create with Charles Jacqueau, Cartier head designer, a new look jewellery mixing exotic stones and colours, very often mounted on Platinum rather than on gold which was more often the case for the Indian jewels. Since the 17th century the Indians had been importing the enormous Colombian emeralds which were then carved with floral patterns front and back, and incorporated into sumptuous pieces of impressive jewellery. Cartier exhibited his astonishing new collection of jewellery at the Seminal Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, in Paris in 1925 . The term ART DECO derives from this exhibition.
44 year old Lee Siegelson is a well known specialist in beautiful historic jewels, Siegelson comes from a family that can trace a century’s presence in the jewellery industry. He also lends his expertise to exhibitions and assists with museum loans of items from the most significant periods and makers in jewellery’s reference books. Verdura’s 75th anniversary retrospective exhibition in late 2014, for example, featured the Verdura for Paul Flato, an aquamarine belt necklace that Siegelson owns and considers the best piece of American jewellery ever made in the 20th century. BMW i3. Has been chosen as the Dow Jones Sustainability index automotive leader for eight years.
Alexander Kotouc will take to the stage at next week’s Global Superyacht Forum in a keynote presentation entitled ‘Smart, Sustainable Mobility’. Kotouc currently oversees the current and future product portfolio of the BMW i brand, including the BMW i8 hybrid sports car and the all-electric BMW i3. Having been chosen as the Dow Jones Sustainability index automotive leader for eight years, it is no surprise that these vehicles are leaders in their field, pushing the boundaries of what is to be expected of an electric car.
With more technology now focused on sustainability and ‘green’ options, the luxury industry – yachting included – has at times been resistant to these changes. Kotouc believes, however, that BMW i are turning this impression around. “We strongly consider sustainability as a factor becoming more and more decisive for premium buyers,’ he notes, with buying patterns changing considerably in this luxury sector, “Around 85% of all BMW i3 customers are new to the BMW brand, meaning they hadn’t taken a traditional BMW into account.”
To Kotouc, there is no question of the future of sustainable technologies within the automotive industry, “We will see electric propulsion systems overtaking the traditional petrol and diesel engine within the next 25 to 30 years.” Indeed, BMW i’s latest concept is the iNext, is an “all-connected iconic vehicle with autonomous driving capabilities and an even higher level of sustainability throughout.”
For Kotouc, the future for ‘green’ transport shouldn’t be restricted to adaptions on original cars to curtail pollution, but re-evaluating the entire process of designing, engineering and using transport, “Sustainability for us means more than just cars without an exhaust pipe. Our target is to avoid emissions even in the production process and supply chain. We call this “Holistic Sustainability.”
BMW i are spearheading sustainable automotive development and the key to their success? Looking at the emotional side of driving, “Sustainability has traditionally lacked emotional appeal. Therefore, we put a strong focus at BMW i as progressive, an aspirational design and driving pleasure.” It is here where the automotive and yachting markets have strong ties, with many owners citing their pure love of the yachting world as their commitment to the industry. Perhaps it is in this vein that yachting must drive forward sustainability, or as Kotouc notes, “Sustainability sells when it appeals to your heart, not just your brain…”
Therefore, what can attendees expect from Kotouc’s session next week? “Inspiration for our world of tomorrow, and that sustainability does not mean sacrifice.”

11 NOVEMBER 2016 • 5:44AM
David Bowie’s art collection went under the hammer on Thursday with one item reaching more than £7 million at auction, as buyers’ enthusiasm for the late musician’s collection exceeded expectations in London.
The highest-selling item in Bowie’s collection, the graffiti-inspired “Air Power” canvas by Basquiat, sold for £7.09 million at Sotheby’s auction house.
The piece had been expected to fetch between £2.5 and £3.5 million.
Bowie bought “Air Power” and another painting by the artist, who died from an overdose in 1988 aged 27, shortly before the 1996 biopic “Basquiat,” in which the rocker played his early idol Andy Warhol.

Bonhams to auction rare limited series George Daniels wristwatch.
SalonQP.com features a George Daniels watch coming up for Auction at Bonhams.
Daniels, is widely regarded as one of the greatest watchmakers to have ever lived. Self-taught, he established the ‘Daniels Method’ by becoming the first person to have mastered 32 of the 34 skills necessary to craft a watch entirely by hand.
Not only did Daniels attain this zen-like mastery of his craft through trial and error, he also invented an entirely new type of escapement, the Co-axial, which Omega eventually purchased and placed at the heart of its watchmaking activities.
Coming to the craft late in life – Daniels completed his first watch in 1969 as he approached the age of 50 – he completed just 27 unique pocket and wrist watches, as well as the Millennium and Anniversary series runs of 58 and 35 pieces respectively.
The Millennium series celebrated the Swiss watch industry’s acceptance of the Co-axial movement. These watches Daniels crafted with his protégé, Roger W Smith, using the very first Omega Co-axial movements in 1998.

MONTEREY CAR WEEK & CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE AUGUST 15 – 21, 2016. Pebble Beach
MONTEREY CAR WEEK & CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE
AUGUST 15 – 21, 2016
A tradition going back over half a century, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is where the world’s collector cars meet and compete. Only the 200 best collector cars in the world roll onto the legendary 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, and only a handful of those will receive official recognition for style, technical merit and historical accuracy.
But the Concours is only the final event in a packed week celebrating the classic automobile! All over Monterey County, classic cars take to streets, golf courses, parks and the world-renowned Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, surrounding visitors with automobiles from yesteryear.

Every August, more than 85,000 auto enthusiasts crowd onto the Monterey Peninsula to participate in the annual seven-day celebration of all things automotive known as Monterey Car Week.
As many as 20,000 attend its colorful Concours d’Elegance, where classic Bentleys and Bugattis pose fender to fender on the spectacular 18th green at Pebble Beach.
A more select 4,000 assemble on the fairways at the Quail Lodge and Golf Club for an intimate gathering of the most expensive auto brands and the connoisseurs who fancy them.
But only 3,000 of the car world’s creme de la creme are able to obtain the most coveted invitation of the week: to Gordon McCall’s Motorworks Revival, a combination auto-moto-aero event held at Monterey Airport’s Jet Center.
Men in bright pastel pants and women in dresses and heels sip Napa Valley sparking wine and slurped Morro Bay oysters while ogling million-dollar new cars from McLaren, Maserati, Pagani and Panoz and equally valuable vintage cars built by Shelby and Ferrari.
Gordon McCall’s Motorworks Revival at Pebble Beach
The annual Monterey Car Week attracts the world’s wealthiest car collectors. But the most exclusive event of the week isn’t the invitation-only Quail or Concours d’Elegance, but Gordon McCall’s Motorworks Revival. Started as a backyard barbecue, the once-informal gathering of automobile, airplane and motorcycle enthusiasts — underwritten by Gulfstream, Bentley, Bell Helicopters and the like — is now the peninsula’s most coveted ticket.
(Don Kelsen / Los Angeles Times)
Between the two hangars hosting the enthusiasts, vintage and very expensive aircraft were parked and artfully lighted on the tarmac — a sleek new Gulfstream alongside a 1930s Stinson tail-dragger and a 1920s Waco biplane.

AC Cobra were originally built by AC Cars in Surrey, England, in the 1960’s. A team of US modified Daytona Cobras, sheathed in aerodynamic coupe bodies, defeated the Ferrari team for the 1965 World Sportscar Championship, a 20-race series held at various venues in the United States and Europe.

HE had hired five vintage auto inspectors to pore over every inch of the gleaming red roadster. But Evan Metropoulos, a collector, had never actually laid eyes on the car until this moment. Now, as the garage door swung open in Beverly Hills, Calif., he held his breath.
“I couldn’t believe it was real,” Mr. Metropoulos recalls of that day in 2009 when he first saw the Shelby Cobra he had bought from its third owner for $1.3 million.
“There was a slight patina to the paint, but over all the car was just so much nicer than I expected,’’ he said. “It was like a time machine.”
Indeed, except for long-ago viewings at some Ford dealers, and brief glimpses on the road when it was new, the car has remained mostly unseen since it was first bought in Laurinburg, N.C., in 1968. The Cobra, a 427 model, will make a rare appearance when it joins a “postwar preservation” class next month at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, in Carmel, Calif.
“With less than 3,000 miles on the clock, and in this condition, I’m not aware of any Cobra that’s more original than CSX3346,” said Ned Scudder, official Shelby American Automobile Club registrar, referring to the car’s chassis number. “It’s really quite extraordinary.”
Conceived by Carroll Hall Shelby, a former Texas chicken farmer who became a prominent international race driver of the 1950s, Cobras were based on the British-built AC Ace Roadster. While retaining that car’s widely admired overall design, Mr. Shelby modified the vehicle to accept Ford Motor’s new V8 engines, which offered greater reliability and a significant step-up in power from AC’s straight sixes.
With an aluminum body and Ford’s thin-walled engine, the car had higher horsepower-to-weight ratios than rivals from Ferrari, Aston Martin and the Chevrolet Corvette. Contemporary automotive journals reported Cobra’s 0-to-60 test times at just over four seconds — “figures still at the sharp end of very quick 50 years later,” Brian Laban wrote in “Shelby and AC Cobra.” “In 1962, for a road car, they must have been almost unbelievable.”
The Cobras were built by AC Cars in Surrey, England, then shipped to Mr. Shelby’s shop in Southern California for final assembly.
Besides victorious campaigns on racing circuits in the United States, a team of Daytona Cobras, sheathed in aerodynamic coupe bodies, defeated the Ferrari team for the 1965 World Sportscar Championship, a 20-race series held at various venues in the United States and Europe.
Mr. Metropoulos says his car, assembled in 1967, was among the last 50 of the fewer than 1,000 Cobras produced in the 1960s. Production stopped in 1968, but the Cobra went on to become one of the most replicated cars, with copies of varying quality made by numerous manufacturers. Until his death in 2012, Mr. Shelby periodically issued “continuation” and commemorative Cobras.
But it was Mr. Shelby’s Cobra that may well have had a greater influence on mass-market automaking and design. “It really became a prototype for the muscle cars of that period,” Mr. Scudder said. “Think of it: small car, big engine — what an American idea!”

New Zealand and Fiji jointly promote the superyacht industry

On 5 August the Fijian yachting industry and a collection of New Zealand’s marine companies will jointly host an open day at Port Denarau Marine and Yacht Club, Fiji, to engage with super yachts and their crew.
“Working cooperatively with the Fijian yacht industry makes sense to us,” comments Peter Busfield, executive director of NZMarine.
Presentations will focus on New Zealand’s well established refit and maintenance sectors, as well as showcasing its destinations and marinas. Superyachts and their crew will have the opportunity to engage with representatives from 25 of New Zealand’s marine companies.
With superyachts requiring periodic refits, New Zealand provides the ideal location for yachts cruising the Pacific Isles to escape the Pacific cyclone season, tend to maintenance works and cruise New Zealand and Australia before returning to Fiji, Tahiti and other Pacific Isles. The open day will feature seminars on passage planning between Fiji and New Zealand, weather patterns, customs clearance and biosecurity requirements.
The New Zealand customs authority has recently introduced a 24-month temporary import entry (TIE) for visiting vessels. This legislative addition enables superyachts to stay in New Zealand for a period of up two years and undertake a mixture of private use, charter work and maintenance, most of which will be exempt from the local 15 per cent Goods and Services tax.

Ancient Ariminum was founded in 268 BC and the arch of Augustus, built in 27 BC as a homage to the emperor, and the Tiberius Bridge on the Marecchia, a construction consisting of five Istria stone arches begun under Emperor Augustus and which Tiberius completed in 21, still pay testimony to its importance during Roman times.
Rimini became a municipality whilst under Byzantine domination during the XII century when new walls and monuments such as the Basilica of St. Agostino were erected. The enlightened lord Sigismondo Malatesta transformed the city into one of the most vibrant cultural centres of the peninsula by calling the greatest artists of the time to his court; some of these contributed to the most famous landmarks: the castle – a turreted fifteenth century fortress – and the temple. This latter masterpiece of Renaissance architecture houses extraordinary works, such as a fresco by Piero della Francesca in the cell of the Relics, a crucifix painted by Giotto and Vasari’s painting depicting St. Francis. With the fall of the Malatesta (XVI century), the town declined to a marginal role and remained under the influence of the Papal States until the unification of Italy.ART & CULTURE Courtesy ITALIA.it

The Italian yachtsman aboard the trimaran Maserati Multi70 for the 2016 season. With sights set on Rolex Middle Sea Race and RORC Transatlantic Race.
The 2016 season is getting underway on something of a high note for Giovanni Soldini and his partners with the move from their previous monohull to the new Maserati Multi70 trimaran. This faster, more modern craft will allow Soldini and his crew to tackle new records and compete in prestige competitions of the likes of the Rolex Middle Sea Race in October and the RORC Transatlantic Race in November.
Flanking Giovanni Soldini this new season are Maserati, returning as main sponsor for the fifth consecutive year, and UnipolSai Assicurazioni which will be playing a more prominent sponsorship role in the project than last season. Also renewing their support as official challenge suppliers are: Ermenegildo Zegna for clothing and Boero Bartolomeo S.p.A. which supplies hull paint and enamels.
After an extremely busy and satisfying three years that saw them clock up an impressive number of nautical miles with the monohull Maserati VOR70, Soldini and his team will henceforth be sailing aboard Maserati Multi70, a cutting-edge, very high performance trimaran capable of making extremely fast speeds. Stretching 21.2 metres in length and 16.8 in the beam with a 29-metre mast, Maserati Multi70 can rise up off the water on her rudders and foils, significantly reducing her wetted surface area to the benefit of performance. The trimaran was originally penned by the VPLP (Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost) studio and optimised by Team Gitana in collaboration with Guillaume Verdier.
“We are just starting to discover Maserati Multi70’s potential. The passage from Lorient gave us our first taste: it was a positive and very enlightening experience,” commented Giovanni Soldini.
“This craft’s innovative character is all down to her appendages. Team Gitana transformed the starboard side with an L-foil and got her flying but always in sheltered waters.
We are now trying to find out if and how it is possible to do the same in a moderate swell. Clearly that will involve a lot of research and development work that we’ve only just begun but what we’ve seen so far is really enthusing us already”.
Three challenges are scheduled for this season: a Monaco-Porto Cervo record attempt, the Rolex Middle Sea Race and RORC Transatlantic Race.
In September, Maserati Multi70 will be on stand-by in Monte Carlo for the perfect weather window for an attempt to set a new multi reference time between Monaco and Porto Cervo, a 195-nautical mile route. The current record is held by the monohull Esimit Europa 2 which covered the distance in 10 hours, 13 minutes and 42 seconds in 2012, making an average speed of 19 knots.
The second challenge of the season is also the most important as the Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of the great classic offshore races. Launched in 1968 and now on its 37th outing, it has attracted some of the leading names in international sailing over the years. The 608-nautical mile route starts and finishes from Malta and involves an anticlockwise circumnavigation of Sicily with the Aeolian Islands, the Egadi Islands, Pantelleria and Lampedusa to port of the fleet. The current race record was set by Rambler (USA) in 2007: she covered the 608 nautical miles in 47 hours, 55 minutes and 3 seconds.
Maserati Multi70’s third and final challenge of the year is the RORC Transatlantic Race, which starts from Lanzarote in the Canaries on November 26 and also marks her ocean debut. The fleet will cross the finish-line at Grenada in the Caribbean after around 3,000 nautical miles of sailing.

The Hommage Millesime 2 is one of last year’s most complicated watches – but it never showed its face until now
Followers of Roger Dubuis could well have been forgiven for writing 2016 off as an unremarkable year. The brand’s showing at SIHH focussed almost excusively on ladies’ watches, and the attention seemed to be on glamorous new iterations of existing (albeit impressive in their own right) skeletonised calibres.
And now this: the Hommage Millesime 2. It combines – deep breath – a split-seconds chronograph, a perpetual calendar with bi-retrograde date displays and a minute repeater. The combination of chronograph, calendar and chiming functions makes it a bona fide grande complication.
Roger-Dubuis-Millesime-Hommage-2-2
And… you will never see it. Very few people will. It is a unique piece, made for the American market, and it has already been sold to a New York collector. The watch was shown at the opening of Roger Dubuis’ first New York boutique last year, in fact, but wasn’t publicised any wider.
Why so rare? Quite apart from the intensely demanding nature of producing such a watch (even non-limited grande complications tend to be counted in the single digits), the Hommage Millesime 2 is a piece unique because only one movement exists.
Roger-Dubuis-Hommage-Millesime-Unique-Pocket-Watch-1
The Millesime project is a restoration project at heart; complicated calibres from the late 19th and early 20th century have been sourced, re-built and re-designed in a style in-keeping with the brand (and in-keeping with the fact that Roger Dubuis himself began life as a restorer of pocket watches). The project was announced with the release of a pocket watch, mid-way through 2015. This also combined minute repeater, perpetual calendar and chronograph functions with retrograde displays, and clearly follows the same aesthetic approach. Every Millesime watch has also been finished to Poincon de Geneve standards (in line with everything else the brand produces). Courtesy and with thanks QPSalon
ROGER_DUBUIS_HOMMAGE_MILLESIME_movement
Take a look at the movement here – a thing of beauty that reminds us of the sensational hand-wound chronographs we photographed last year. Most visible is the chronograph mechanism, with the pincer-shaped split-seconds levers in the centre of the movement. Two column wheels are used, both capped with a top plate and large screw (Patek Philippe is one other brand to cap off its column wheels; most other brands like to leave them open).
To the right of the split-seconds column wheel (near where it says “Roger” on the case) is a hammer for the minute repeater; we would expect there to be a second hammer nearby but it’s not clear where. Also notable is the large balance wheel with several fine adjustment points. When possible, we will update this piece with more information from Roger Dubuis about the movement chosen for this watch.
The movement is signed in various places, reading “1/1”, “Forty Jewels”, “RD 180” (the new designation for the restored movement) and at least one further inscription we’re not clear on.

The 6th arrondissement is, above all things, inspiring. Saint Germain has been at the centre of French intellectual life, with scholars, artists, existentialists, bohemians, and politicians. The Croatian government has implemented a new regulation that requires all superyachts over 45m to appoint a local agent, should they wish to cruise in Croatian territorial waters. This new regulation is an extension of the European Union’s Directive 2002/59/EC, a directive that previously only applied to commercial vessels in Croatia.
Directive 2002/59/EC aims to improve maritime safety, port and maritime security, environmental protection and pollution preparedness by efficiently monitoring maritime traffic and transport. The implementation of Directive 2002/59/EC in Croatia requires vessels, now including yachts over 45m, to be monitored by the Croatian Maritime Information System (CIMIS), which can only be used by registered Croatian marine agents.
This latest iteration of European maritime law could not come at a less opportune moment with the Mediterranean season in full swing. Had the change been implemented before the season began, headaches may well have been avoided.
“As of now, if a superyacht over 45m arrives at any Croatian port without an agent, the customs office will not grant it clearance,” explains Dorijan Dujmic, a representative from BWA’s Croatian office.
This small, and otherwise benign, change of regulation should, in theory, cause very little disruption to the Croatian superyacht market. However, this is dependent on charter brokers, yacht management teams and captains being informed in a timely and concise manner to ensure errors are avoided in Croatian waters and the necessary agencies are contacted in advance. The Guardian’s Stephanie Kirchgaessner highlights problems with Monte dei Paschi Bank in Italy.
EU finance ministers get tough with Italian bank trying for third bailout
EU rules forbid troubled Tuscan bank Monte dei Paschi from receiving state aid, but its collapse would cause a political crisis for prime minister Matteo Renzi

The idea of modern banking was born in Siena in 1624, when the Medici Grand Duke decided to guarantee accounts held at Monte dei Paschi, the world’s oldest bank, with the proceeds of pasture he held in the Maremma in south-western Tuscany.
Nearly 400 years later, the principle established by the Tuscan ruler – that account holders and investors are protected by the state – lies at the heart of a crisis at Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) that is worrying financial markets around the world.
Analysis Quiet crisis: why battle to prop up Italy’s banks is vital to EU stability
Forget Brexit or Grexit, €360bn of bad loans within a fragmented Italian banking sector could be the biggest threat of all
Read more
The country’s third-largest lender has already been bailed out twice in modern Italian history but is likely to need a third multibillion-euro intervention by the Italian government – a move that would need Brussels to break new rules designed to prevent such taxpayer bailouts after the 2008 global financial crisis.
So the question of who will pay for the inevitable rescue of MPS, whose share value has fallen 80% over the past year, has yet to be answered.
Three weeks after the news that Britain has voted to leave the European Union shocked the markets, a debate over the fate of MPS and the economic and political repercussions of inaction is raging from Rome to Brussels and Paris to Berlin.
The welfare of thousands of Italian households is at stake, as well as the political fortune of Italy’s prime minister, Matteo Renzi, who is facing the toughest political challenge of his career. It is also testing Italy’s credibility among foreign investors.
“There is no way they will let the bank go and create a systemic effect,” said Wolfango Piccoli, co-president of Teneo Intelligence. “The mechanics are still unclear but there will be a third bailout of Monte dei Paschi.”
The bank’s financial problems are neither new nor surprising. According to the IMF, Italian banks have €360bn (£300bn) of non-performing loans – loans that are likely to turn into bad debts – mostly taken out by small Italian businesses battered by years of recession. Italy returned to growth in 2015 but the improvements are only modest and this week the IMF said the country’s GDP was not likely to return to pre-crisis levels until the mid-2020s.
Unlike the US, Spanish and Irish financial crises, the Italian banking crisis is not the result of a speculative property bubble. While other issues have exacerbated the turmoil at Monte dei Paschi’s – including a poorly judged €9bn acquisition – the primary reason the bank is in trouble is because it doled out billions of euros in loans to small businesses at a time when the scale of the recession facing Italy was gravely underestimated.
From 2007 to 2013, Italy lost about a quarter of its industrial production and tens of thousands of companies collapsed. In 2013 more than 150 shops closed every day. Construction and home sales slumped and none of the sectors has recovered fast enough.
“These are all problems that are well known and have existed for years. The government – not just this one but the previous one – should have acted earlier,” said Vincenzo Scarpetta, an analyst at Open Europe.
Now the collapse of Monte dei Paschi’s shares, coupled with concern brought on by Brexit and fears that the Siena bank will fail a vital bank stress test on 29 July, has forced Italy’s hand: the banks need a bailout of about €45bn – a sum that most experts argue cannot be raised from investors.
Italian banks under pressure as Popolare di Vicenza IPO fails
Read more
During years of inaction by successive Italian governments, the country’s banks missed a critical window of opportunity. They are now subject to European banking regulations that would force the bank’s bondholders to take a significant hit before the state can inject funds. About a third of those bondholders are ordinary Italians.
Renzi’s government has already had a bitter taste of how badly the crisis could go if Italian pensioners were wiped out by the new rules. Last November the prime minister passed a decree in which four regional banks were saved. While depositors and senior bondholders were protected in the deal, thousands of junior bondholders were wiped out, leading one pensioner to commit suicide and a political backlash against Renzi.
But Brussels has so far shown little interest in the domestic economic risks and the potential for political backlash.
Last month Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, said that the EU would not veer from the new rules. Renzi retorted that he was in no mood to be “given a lesson by the schoolteacher”.
Earlier this week Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutch finance minister and the head of Eurogroup, the informal grouping of EU’s finance ministers, downplayed the extent of Italy’s banking woes. “There have always been and will always be bankers who say: ‘We need more public money to recapitalise our banks’ and I will resist that very strongly because it is, again and again, hitting the taxpayer,” he said.
Dijsselbloem was partly responding to Deutsche Bank’s David Folkerts-Landau, who has argued that Brussels needs a €150bn bailout to begin a major recapitalisation of European banks. Analysts in Italy have raised questions about the huge UniCredit and local banks Rimini and Cesena.
Renzi holds an important card in this fight. His Democratic party is the only major political party in Italy that has shown unwavering support for the euro and the EU. His biggest rival, the populist Five Star Movement, is gaining traction following two big wins in local elections in Rome and Turin and could displace Renzi if the prime minister fails to win a critical referendum in the autumn on his sweeping constitutional reforms. He has sworn to resign if the referendum fails.
While the constitutional reforms and the banking crisis are not directly linked, Brussels is keenly aware that support for any Renzi initiative will be guided by voters’ view of the economy.
“If Italians lose faith in the banking sector it is a huge problem because going after the banks has always been a big card of the Five Star Movement,” said Piccoli.
“If something goes badly wrong with the banks – like a run – it would potentially bring down Renzi’s government because [it has] been saying the banks are solid.”

Hillary Clinton has announced her intention to ‘shuffle the pack’ to help the beleaguered middle classes but when it comes to Hillary Clinton’s own fundraising efforts the deck seems pretty firmly stacked in favour of the rich and powerful.

Butchoff, one of London’s most well known Antiques dealers located on Kensington Church Street, is presenting a selection of outstanding pieces of Decorative European furniture, that could grace a Royal Palace or a famous museum, such as the Wallace Collection. Shown here is an outstanding Morel and Seddon table made for Windsor castle. Made in unusual Amboyna, an exotic hardwood sourced from an island in the South East pacific. With ormolu gilt bronze mounts, rising from ormolu scroll feet cast with lotus ornaments. There is an excellent Royal provenance for this rare table. The table was ordered in King George 1V’s reign (1762-1830) King George 1V, as the flamboyant Prince of Wales, would probably have known Nicolas Morel who made furniture for the Prince’s glittering & gilded Brighton Pavilion. Morel joined forces with George Seddon (London Cabinet Maker) in 1827. The famous Windsor Commission, a large collection of bespoke furniture, of which this rare table was a part, was ordered in 1828. Archive Documents show that the Windsor Commission was worth a phenomenal £200.000.
